During Solomon’s reign, Jerusalem was the epicenter of the world. In 1 Kings 10, we read about the Queen of Sheba’s visit, a royal dignitary who, struck by God’s generosity and favor towards Solomon and Israel, marvels at His wisdom, provision, and the joy it brings to the people. Overwhelmed, she makes a prophetic declaration: “Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, He has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness.” (v.9)
She follows these words by gifting the king with almost nine thousand pounds of gold–about three hundred and seventy five million dollars at early 2025 prices–and large quantities of spices and precious stones. Her words, and actions, are a glimpse into what is happening on an even larger scale. Scripture records that the weight of the gold that Solomon receives yearly is about fifty-one thousand pounds, and that year after year, everyone who came brought gifts.
