Are Christian Feasts Pagan?
|
That's quite a controversal question for anyone to ask, but Dan Juster does not shrink from asking it! His starting point is with the assertion that Christians seeking to recover the Jewish roots of their faith often claim that the Church celebrations are on the wrong dates. It is then said that the Church dates are pagan. Dan does not think that the evidence for this claim is at all clear and walks us through how the Jewish calendar works and therefore For the Rabbis the dates of the Feasts are set by man; only the Sabbath is set by God. He looks at the evidence of history, preceding Jewish tradition and liturgical ppogression before concluding that ... calling the Church to return to Jewish roots should not be not based on criticism of Church celebrations as being rooted in paganism and calling on them to adopt the true Jewish dates as if rabbinic dating methods are absolute. Dan finishes by sharing what he thinks the call to return to Jewish roots means and leaves us with the thought that: Such an approach to Jewish roots is a much more feasible and truthful way to approach the churches and to gain their support in the great last days work for the salvation of Israel. But there is more to it than this, so don't leave it there - you can read the whole article on the Tikkun America Resources page. Do you agree with Dan Juster's arguments or do you think he is overlooking something? Leave a comment to let us know!
